Sometimes when we arrive at Compton Initiative we already know what our task for the workday is and other we just show up to rally and go with the flow. This workday was one where we just showed up. We got assigned to go paint a mural, so we headed over to the church across the street from our wall. When we got there it was obvious there was WAY too many people to paint one wall, so...

Gamers for Good volunteers at: The Compton Initiative July 2016

There is nothing like getting your hands dirty community service to really help center any nonprofit worker. Sweat earned out in the community giving back is just the recharge of spirit I was needing. After so many months inside on the computer or out at events meeting folks, it was time to put the muscles to work for others again. I was so excited for this Compton Initiative workday. I can really stand behind a community that...

Retro: Game Developer’s Conference 2016

What should we repeat? There was a need for these reviews: When we went into planning this, we weren’t certain we would be active, we hoped, we thought, but not certain. We are certain now. The only thing that limited our ability to have even more portfolios reviewed was space and time. Flexibility: We decided very early to sacrifice everything looking neat and pretty to get more reviewers going and utilized space around our booth too. This on the fly change allowed us to...

March 2015 LA Foodbank

Paired up again with a pack of Gnomon students, and lots of LA area gamers for good we went to serve at the LA Food Bank prepping for distribution. I think everyone should have to work at a Foodbank 1 day a year, so you are a better donator to food drives at a minimum. The quality of food is very low and not very nutritionally dense. The camaraderie built that day around some manual labor for the service of...

Oct 2013 Richland Elementary School Haunted House

After Peet and I have participated in the construction of the Haunted House at our daughter’s school, Richland Elementary, the previous year, we had to ask if we could invite other gamers to come help out too! They were excited to get the extra help and that game artists wanted to come help create their Wild West themed haunted house. So we gathered up some other Gamers for Good and headed over to the school one Sat afternoon in early October.
